Unit 31 - P1 - Explain the different types of animation

What the term Animation means

Animation is [1] a simulation of movement created by displaying a series of pictures, or frames. This is basically to sum animation up in one sentence and an example of this is many cartoons you see on television. This movement is viewed from the persistence of the eye, this is when the eye sees an image and preserves it for a split second before seeing the next image which gives the pictures movement.

Two Non-Computer Types of Animation

Flipbook animation

Flipbook animation today is recognised all over the world as one of the earliest forms of interactive media (animation). Created by a man named Henry Van Hovenbergh from Elizabeth, New Jersey, these early ones just like today consisted of images drawn by hand but today by computer and hand stacked in sequential stages of movement and when flicked through by the use of a simple staple binding this would give the optical illusion of movement within the pictures. As you can see in the image to the right hand side these 4 stickmen would go on separate pages and when flicked through the pages fast enough his arms will give the illusion of moving.

Clay animation

[2] Clay animated films were produced in the United States as early as 1908 when Edison Manufacturing released a trick film entitled The Sculptor’s Welsh Rarebit Dream. But after this two people named Helena Smith Dayton and Willie Hopkins this was a huge hit but in the 1920’s cartoon animation using either cels or slash animation was firmly established and even though clay animation was still going on it wasn’t as big as it had previously been. The image on the right was a piece of clay animation from the early years of its development.

Computer Animation Techniques

There is a variety of software used when it comes to computer animation and the whole process of making it which takes patience and clever art work, you can use Photoshop to create animation flipbooks or for one of the best 3D animation software you could try Modo

or Cinema 4D which are both very professional when making computer animation. Movement is achieved through using frame by frame images just like when using flipbook animation, hut there is also morphing which is used to get from one object to another by not changing it straight away but by morphing it which is basically transforming it into another shape. There is also tweening which helps you choose where you want that object to move to in the end of its course after it has done either moving or morphing. For example the image on the right shows the frame by frame movement in which a character has to take in computer animation. There is also one other type of computer animation technique and this is masking, masking is when the animator covers part of the scene up where the animtion is taking place so he can change it later. After this the animation will be revealed.

Technical Knowledge

When it comes to finding a job employers want a person who is capable of knowing all that they need to know when it comes to the technical side of things. For example if it was a job in the IT business employers would want a person who knows all of the hardware and all of the possessed knowledge to help them do their job better. In a result of this employers will become more reliable in that employee.

Working Procedures and Systems

There are many systems and procedures when it comes to working in a job which requires you to follow rules and policies such as the health and safety policy which was made to help employees be more safe and secure around the workplace. [1] Abbreviated as CDP and also called continuous backup, continuous data protection refers to backing up computer data by saving as an automated function a copy every time changes are made to that data. It allows users to restore files that are corrupted or that have been accidentally deleted, back to any point in time before they were lost .This basically means any of the workers information can be saved and never lost.

General Needs

Planning and Organisation Skills

Planning when working in a business environment can be very important because it can lead to being more organised around your work and this will impress an employer as they know you will be always on time and work can be done by the expected date that it is due.

Time Management

Time management can be key when working in a business environment just like planning because when you are in a working environment and you have your work all planned out it helps to keep thing organised. So if you keep everything to a time restriction this will help save time in work but also create time for other things.

Verbal and Written Communication Skills

Verbal and communication skills are key to have when looking for a job in and working environment. Verbal skills can be very important when looking into a job, having verbal skills can open up many doorways in a working environment, it can also help with: team working skills, presentations and interviews. Written communication skills can also be key in a working environment because this will help with passing messages on or sending letters out to people to tell them something about the work place, this can also be used when presenting your business to investors on flyers because without actually speaking to you they can already find out what your business is about and what you are trying to promote.

Numeric Skills and Creativity

Numeric skills can help when problem solving when you are working, employers will look for this especially if you are working in a finance department because they will want you to be good with numeracy and calculating numbers. Creativity can also help with using you knowledge to come up with an idea for instance if the employer set you a task for a new image to represent the company.

Attitudes

Determination

Determination can be a very good attribute and attitude to have when working in a business environment because it will show the employer that you will take on the task and do it to the best you can with your determination. Determination is a good quality to have if you want to move forward and be more successful.

Independence

Having independence in a working environment can be also a good attitude to have because this will show the employer that you are very capable of doing the work he sets you, by yourself in a good quality.

Working with Integrity

If you work with integrity this will make sure the employer sees that you can work with honesty and it shows that you will present your work with honour and that you are not afraid to show the work you have been doing so hard over a period of time.

Tolerance

In a work place employers look for people who want to work with all the other attitudes and attributes and also this one tolerance which means that you can tolerate the amount of work that the employer might give you and if you can tolerate this work the employer will be impressed and can put you down as being tolerate towards the work place.

Dependable

Being dependable with an employer can be a very good attribute because being able to call yourself dependable is an achievement within itself because then people will rely on you to do stuff for them in this case to do work for the employer. The employer will respect you more because of this because they can trust you to do something for them when need be, being dependable is also one step towards being more independent.

Problem Solving

Having problem solving skills is something which employers will look for because instead of struggling and saying just like some people that you can’t do it won’t be good enough, therefore problem solving will help yourself and employer see the more gifted and talented side of you.

Leadership Skills

Well this is a big skill employers will look for in a person before employing them because as well as being able to work independently by yourself is one thing but being able to work with others in a group and being able to lead that group is a good skill because it shows you want to move forward. Moving forward with a group and not just yourself can be good because it shows how capable you are at that job.

Confidence

Having confidence in yourself can be vital because if you don’t have confidence in yourself you can present your ideas and say them well without having lost faith in yourself, this means you will pick up verbal communication skills along the way.

Self-Motivation

[2] Fundamental to self-motivation is understanding what motivates you to do things. This is a sentence I took from online that really sums up what self-motivation really is and it’s all about you because you may have confidence in others but to have confidence in yourself is even better because it gives you a voice to express yourself with.
